So I’m gettin ready to head out the door, and vibin out to an old mix CD from back in the day. Copped just a bit before I moved out here (if memory serves), DJ Skribble – Traffic Jams. This shit still gets play, and deserves it. Talk about a timeless mix. It has got a phenomenal vibe to it. Subsequent releases got a little too house got my hip hop tastes (which I would have dug, were it not for more hip hop expectations back in the say, but I was a little more narrowminded on seperating my hip hop and club stuff back in the day).

Besides the CD, Skribble was EVERYWHERE! Dude was all over the radio, and I remember him blowin up everywhere on TV as well. BET, MTV, and the such, especially over Spring Break. I think I still got a VHS somewhere of him rippin up his Peter Piper routine on a Jerry Springer hosted show. Got reminiscent about it after hearin it last night at Rock Island Live.

Anyways, classic CD that is highly recommended. Just got a great “lets get ready to party vibe” and I’m feeling it. Now I’m out the door for a night with the Jaeger girls and we going to tear it up at Finn’s tonight. Let’s get it!

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, a cut off the mix, some classic Flipmose steez. Yeah, you bumped your head and woke up and was like…Flipmode…Flipmode is the greatest!

Sample Sources….I love them. I love digging and finding the original to a song and hearing how it was flipped or tweaked to bring something all new.

Thankfully, I’ve got a great new venue in Rockstar Thursdays at Rock Island Live that allows me to do ANYTHING I want, and this past week, I went in on some sample sources. It is a great thing to play music for music people for a change of pace. They like to get down, but it’s a different audience than the normal club stuff. And every track I’ve ever dog-eared as a great tune, but would never get to play out now has a home, and I am loving it. The crowd is super appreciative of it, and the performers have been spectacular. For those who don’t know, every Thursday, 3 completely different acts in different genres take the stage, with me playing a variety of tunes between performances. Huge thanks to Becky (Twitter – Facebook) and Nnanna (Twitter – Facebook)for allowing me the pleasure of getting down on Thursdays. And thanks to all the new friends and faces I’ve met out there. Great people, all the time. It’s a great vibe.

So, this past week I was listening to the radio, and in the background of some chatter, they were playing the instrumental to Mos Def – Ms Fat Booty.

I HATE it when they do that and I don’t realize it’s a commercial. Just such a tease to a tune I would love to hear. Now I know full well that they would not be playing it, but still. In any case, I got home from the drive and immediately put on the record, and enjoyed the original that the sample was pulled from -> Aretha Franklin – One Step Ahead.

That being said, I had an immediate desire to put together some samples for this past Friday, but I really didn’t have time to plan a set, but at one point, the band was not ready, so I just improvised as best I could. There are so many to choose from, but I can’t go sharing everything on my first blog post in a long time…

So, Bill Withers is the man. Never can deny that. One fairly unknown sample that carries a VERY different vibe from where it was pulled is Bill Withers – Grandma’s Hands, sampled by Teddy Riley for this production.

This was probably the last true gem of production that Teddy Riley put out, and it is a classic. On top of that, this is one of my favorite videos ever, cuz Lil Penny just killed it!

If you lil kids don’t know about Lil Penny….

Now then, I suppose I’ve got one more to share. Hmmmm… I could go into some funk that I was feeling, but I’ll stick with sample sources for the moment. Now this next jam is a classic. Some songs that are sampled don’t always stand on their own as so classic and playable. This is not one of those songs. This is a gem that I can listen to anytime and it’s just soo damn smooth. Produced by Quincy Jones, and performed by The Brothers Johnson – Strawberry Letter 23.

This was actually a cover of the original by Shuggie Otis, but it was a more mellow tune. Quincy gave it more funk with some disco polish. The most recognizable sample is OutKast – “Ms Jackson”. Color Me Badd also replicated some of the vocal stylings for use on “I Wanna Sex You Up” to identify a few. Also, there is the new version of the song by Quincy Jones ft Akon, which leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I really would have been a lot better off if this had never been created. Just…HORRIBLE… I won’t even provide a link on my site. If you seek it, I don’t want you to associate me with sending you in that direction.

So this is one blog, and hopefully many more to come. Been having lots of people holler at me about getting this thing up and running. LEave a comment, lemme know what’s good. Or even suggestions for future posts.

Peace,

Wow…Shit’s been crazy. My baby girl is over a year old, and Levi just turned 5. Been crazy busy with a whole lot of gigs. Also working on building a new bedroom for my baby girl. Anyways, I been delayed in putting up some promised Halloween tunes (sorry!), so that being said, here we go.

Start old. Back in the day, I remember my good friend Nick gave me an aptly titles “80s Synth Cheese” mixtape. Had tons of great tunes on it. One of which was “Everyday is Halloween”. I actually have/had the CD single of this tune (gotta find it to rip something better than 128). Kinda comical for all those Ministry fans who only know them for their hard stuff. Back in the 80s, they were very pop in the day.
Ministry – Everyday Is Halloween

Another classic for the day in certain circles would have to be Halloween by The Misfits. A few years back I copped a dope remix via the Hollertronix board (I think) done by Cousin Cole and Flufftronix. If memory serves, one did it first, then other came in and reworked it after that. Not for everyone, but dope for some.
The Misfits – Halloween (Cousin Cole vs Flufftronix remix)

I still remember clips from this video being on the opening for 120 Minutes, the old rock/metal show on MTV and that cracked me, as it was not something they would ever play, but the video had great visuals. Then again, so do most Aphex Twin videos.

Aphex Twin – Come To Daddy

On the hip hop tip, this one works. Mistah fab laces some good tunes. Also, his “Hit Me On Twitter” video is damn comical.

Mistah FAB – Ghostride It

I think you have to play Michael Jackson – Thriller. It’s pretty much an obligation. There are a number of dope remixes, edits and otherwise. One that I really enjoy that Paturn threw on a mix a while back was Woodhead’s edit. Minimal, super dope usage of the track. A phenomenal touch up.
Michael Jackson – Thriller (Woodhead Ghetto Re-Edit)

Also, on the club tip, we got a Psycho remix (I think I copped this off the Hollerboard also).
Crooks & Gunn – Psych!

Lastly, as a True Blood fanatic, this remix had me going off. Even though the season finale was kind of a let down. Depeche Mode – Corrupt would prolly go over with the right crowd

But the main reason is this stoopid fresh remix of the main theme song, copped from the good folks at Mad Decent.

DJing a fashion show was…interesting. Originally, I thought I’d just be doing some quick mixes to keep things moving, and then I was told they would have someone speaking on each outfit, so I decided to go with instrumentals. That being said, I wasn’t sure what to go with that would have the right energy. So it was a mix of club/uptempo hip hop beats that I thought were the most friendly. The opening tune, Kid Sister – I’ll House You.

Dope update of the classic Jungle Brothers cut. Fresh production courtesy of Fool’s Gold labelmate, Treasure Fingers. Nice bounce to Kid Sis’ vocals as she does it up proper, and I don’t know of many people that are mad about this update. This was put together as part of a Reebok Classic Remix promotion with classic cuts getting updated (also in on it has been B.o.B. and Kidz In Da Hall) as well as the look on the Reeboks. Get it? “Classic”? Very clever.

Kid Sister – I’ll House You
Kid Sister – I’ll House You (Instrumental)

I’ve used the OG Jungle Brothers acapella a few times to work with this with some decent success

Jungle Brothers – I’ll House You (Houseapella)

Now that being said, it’s been done much better by DJ Mighty Mi, blending the 2 tunes back and forth. Cop it at the Fool’s Gold blog.

That being said, one of the tracks I’ve been dropping this acapella over with much more frequency (as I’ve been playing a whole lot more house) is over the Alan Braxe & Fred Falke – Intro. I remember this tune getting stuck in my head for hours as it was on an old mix of DJ Shelly (formerly of Wichita, last I knew, he was in KC, would love to get contact info on him anyone out there has got info). I played that CD to death, can’t remember the name of it though. Classic disco house stylings (if anyone’s got a copy, holla at me!) that was done VERY well, at least as far as memory serves. Falke was also a part of Stardust, along with Thomas Bangalter (of Daft Punk fame) and Benjamin Diamond on vocals to make “Music Sounds Better With You”. I think these 2 tracks can certify him as a club legend. Dude puts out quality, period. Anyways, here is the dope tune that generously samples from The Jets – Crush On You (2:35 mark).

Well that raps up this posting. Hope you enjoy the tunes. Please hit the comment button and let me know what you think.
